molecules to evolve in the test tube. With the discovery of catalytic RNA, and advances in nucleic acid amplification techniques such as the polymerase chain reaction, it became possible to construct laboratory systems that allow the Darwinian evolution of functional RNA (and later DNA) molecules. This is not evolution based on natural selection, but rather directed evolution based on selection constraints imposed by the experimenter. We’ve been playing these in vitro evolution games in my own laboratory for the past 10 years. The counterforce, it turns out, is not much to look at — typically, 20 microliters of a clear, colorless solution. But in those solutions the Titans are rumbling. We can begin in the lab on a Monday with a population of 1014 random-sequence nucleic acid molecules and by Friday witness the emergence of order in the form of macromolecules of a particular sequence that perform a specific catalytic task. Over the week, the evolving system has expended more than 1017 energy-rich nucleoside triphosphates, but has created an island of order in a universe that is forever tumbling toward a state of maximum entropy.

DFT Study of Hydrogen Bonding on Calix[8]arene as Nanostructure Compound

An azobenzene bridge was introduced into the lower (or smaller) rim of p-tert-butylcalix[8]arene to form 1,5-singly bridged calix[8]arene derivatives, respectively. Bridged calix[8]arene of conformationally rigid wereisolated. The stability of the two structures of bridged calix[8]arenes have been compared. The study of organicstructure to form nanoporous structures is a well known in chemistry ...

Isomerism and Hydrogen Bonding in the Cis-enol Forms of 1-(n-pyridyl)butane-1,3-diones: A Theoretical Study

Molecular structure, isomerism, conformational stability and intramolecular hydrogen bonding (IHB) of cis-enol forms of 1-(n-pyridyl)butane-1,3-diones (nPBD) (n = 2, 3, or 4) have been investigated by means of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Energy differences for all possible nPBD cis-enol forms of isomers with respect to the most stable form of the correspondin...

Studies of Hydrogen Bonding Effects on DiPalmitoyl Phosphatidyl Etanolamine (DPPE) by theoretical Methods

Hydrogen bonding of DPPE with water that surrounded of membrane, plays an important role in permeability ofmembrane that we were presented this matter with analysis of bond angles and torsion angles before and after ofadded water molecules.Interaction with water molecules causes some changes in the geometry of DPPE which were explained bythe contribution of zwitterionic form of DPPE molecule, a...

Inductive Effect of Bioactive Intermolecular Hydrogen Bonding Complex of 1,2,4,5 –Tetrazine and Inorganic Acid by NMR and QTAIM

In this paper, NMR and QTAIM analysis for three substituted of T2SA complex was investigated in the gas and four solvents at DFT level. Intermolecular O–H…N hydrogen bonds between 1,2,4,5-Tetrazine and Sulphurous acids enhance the stability of complex.1,2,4,5-Tetrazine is a highly reactive diene for [4+2] inverse-Diels–Alder cycloaddition processes and an excellent precursor to attain the pyrid...

Computational study of the intramolecular proton transfer between 6-hydroxypicolinic acid tautomeric forms and intermolecular hydrogen bonding in their dimers

This paper is a density functional theory (DFT) calculation of intramolecular proton transfer (IPT) in 6-hydroxypicolinic acid (6HPA, 6-hydroxypyridine-2-carboxylic acid) tautomeric forms. The transition state for the enol-to-keto transition is reported in the gas phase and in four different solvents. The planar and non-planar dimer forms of 6HPA keto and enol, respectively, were also studied i...
